SUMMARY:Campus Listening Session
DESCRIPTION:Please save the dates: either Sunday\, September 13th at 9:00am in the Parish Hall\, OR Wednesday\, September 23rd at 7pm on Zoom \nOver the course of this year\, leaders at Resurrection have been taking a close look at our buildings and grounds. We’ve examined how these spaces are used and by whom and we’ve explored the history of our campus\, going back to the very beginning. Earlier this summer\, we gathered to hear that story shared out (in Godly Play form\, no less!) and have seen it stretching out as a timeline on our sanctuary wall. It’s been wonderful to see many of you add to that timeline when you joined the church and other important events. This month\, a great many of you filled out a survey on your experience of our campus — thank you so much! \nNext in this process\, we’ll be holding two listening sessions — one in person on September 13th at 9:00am and one on Zoom on September 23rd at 7pm. During these gatherings\, we’ll be sharing back the main themes from the survey. Together we’ll reflect on this information and invite you to help us go deeper in understanding the ideas\, hopes\, concerns and possibilities that are emerging in our work together. You only need to attend one of the sessions; they will be sharing the same information and questions. \nThank you!

SUMMARY:Vestry Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Church members and clergy together lead our congregation through a governing board called the Vestry\, much like a board of directors. The Vestry consists of 12 church members\, elected at the annual meeting of the church\, and the Rector. The Vestry is the legal governing and decision-making body of the church who sets vision and direction for the congregation\, approves the parish budget\, makes parish policy decisions\, and spends the parish’s money. When the Rector leaves the Church it is the Vestry who calls the next Rector. The Vestry at Church of the Resurrection meets on the Second Wednesday evening of most months\, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm in the Sanctuary. Vestry meetings are open to all church members to attend and listen. The meetings minutes are also available for members to read\, and are kept in the office. Please contact our Senior Warden with questions.

SUMMARY:Vestry\, Deanery\, and Legacy Fund Board Nominations for 2027
DESCRIPTION:It is time once again to look ahead to 2027 and consider our next class of Vestry members and Deanery delegates. Every January\, at our Annual Meeting\, the congregation elects members to serve on the church Vestry (our board of directors) for a 3-year term. There are 12 people on the vestry\, and typically we elect four new members each year. In order to be eligible to be a Vestry member\, you need to be a “Communicant in Good Standing\,” a slightly odd term the Episcopal Church uses\, which means that you have been faithful in working\, praying and giving for the spread of the Kingdom of God as a member here at Church of the Resurrection for at least a year. The same requirements hold for being a deanery delegate as well. As a delegate\, you represent Church of the Resurrection at quarterly deanery meetings (a group made up of the Episcopal churches in East Contra Costa County) and can speak and vote at the annual Diocesan Convention. \nThis year\, we have added an additional position open to nomination: that of Legacy Fund Board member. The Legacy Fund was set up 20 years ago to encourage and facilitate planned gifts in support of the mission and outreach of this congregation. Each board member is asked to serve a five year term and will rotate off the board at the conclusion of their term. For more information on the Legacy Fund\, please click here: https://resurrectionph.org/connect/give/legacy-fund/ \nWe invite anyone who is interested (and meets the eligibility requirements) to send an email to Rev. Liz with their self-nomination and they will need to be seconded from another church member (not in their household or family). The period for self-nomination is September 1 – September 30th. \nIf you have questions\, please feel free to reach out to Rev. Liz or Rev. Whitney.

SUMMARY:New Small Groups Forming
DESCRIPTION:For the past three years\, we have offered new ways to connect with other church members while deepening our spiritual selves.  Each fall\, different small groups have been created as a way to find a new practice with others. These groups will be forming again this September and will meet over the next few months. This is your opportunity to decide to participate\, because once the groups are formed they will not be re-opened to additional members so that the group can form cohesion and build trust. We’ll then start new small groups again the following fall. \nIf you are interested in participating in either of the small groups listed below\, please email Rev. Whitney by August 31st. \n“Emmaus Group:” Finding Jesus along the way \nA small group that will include about 6-8 people that will meet twice a month for an initial period of 4 months. The group will discuss faith journeys and will read and discuss “Walk in Love\,” a study of the Episcopal church tenets. \n“Finding the Bible” Small Groups: These 6-person groups will meet every week to study different books of the Bible\, beginning with a month-long biblical overview. The group will meet for about an hour and have time for Bible study\, prayer\, and check-in. \nPlease email Rev. Whitney if you have questions or are interested in these groups.

SUMMARY:Mid-week Eucharist
DESCRIPTION:Each Wednesday\, we gather for an intimate and more relaxed Eucharist (communion service). We gather our chairs in a circle in front of the altar in our sanctuary\, and then decide together who will read the readings from scripture. We share those aloud\, and also read about the saint who is remembered on the church’s calendar that day. In place of a sermon\, we then have a conversation as a group about where the readings and the saint’s story touch our lives today. We conclude with prayers and share communion. The service lasts less than an hour. It is a lovely way to reset and find our center again in the middle of the week.

SUMMARY:Peace and Justice Ministry
DESCRIPTION:The Peace and Justice Ministry group met last Thursday to continue building a foundation for supporting Peace and Justice work in our church\, neighborhood and world. This is a non-partisan group grounded in gospel values\, our Baptismal covenant\, and the General Convention resolutions of the wider Episcopal Church. \nWe reflected on concrete action Church of the Resurrection has taken in the past to support Peace and Justice initiatives\, including being a witness at the annual Clayton Pride Parade; educating through presentations on ballot propositions that present both sides of each issue; and advocacy by writing to our local representatives in support of just legislation. We look forward to deepening our involvement in these areas of witness\, education and advocacy\, and partnering with other churches and agencies to support our common work. \nA key takeaway was creating a flexible ministry that allows anyone to participate to the extent that they are interested and available. \nThe next meeting of the Peace and Justice Ministry group will be Tuesday\, August 18 at 7 p.m. in the parish hall. We will be discussing ways to witness\, educate\, advocate and act on behalf of the agencies we will support at September’s Party With a Purpose. All are welcome!

SUMMARY:Welcome back to Sunday School & Waterslide Sunday
DESCRIPTION:Please mark your calendars for Sunday August 16th when we will kick off Sunday School for another year and celebrate with our traditional “Waterslide Sunday.” All kids\, ages 2-11 are welcome to attend Sunday School in the Parish Hall (just across from the sanctuary) beginning at 10:15am. The class begins in the larger room with fun gathering activities and then moves to the smaller classroom for the Bible story and class time. The class time lasts about 40 minutes and there is plenty of space for wiggles. Parents are welcome to attend as well. \nSunday School teachers will lead the children back to church at the Passing of Peace (before communion) so they can rejoin their families. After communion\, the kids will be invited to come to the front and receive a blessing as they return back to school to start a new year. They are welcome to bring their backpacks as well. \nAfter the worship service concludes\, the church will provide a pizza lunch\, and a waterslide will be set up on the lawn. All families are welcome to participate. If you have any questions\, please let Rev. Whitney know.

SUMMARY:The Story of Our Campus
DESCRIPTION:During our Annual Meeting in January\, we shared that we were embarking on a big project to create a master plan for our campus. We are excited to invite you to an important step in this process. This Sunday\, July 26th at 9:00 am in the Parish Hall we will introduce a comprehensive timeline and story of our campus. \nA group of talented parishioners put together this timeline to celebrate the blessings we have received by the land we have and all the many ways we are able to engage it. And\, over the years\, it has become evident that the absence of a comprehensive campus plan has created a piecemeal approach that hasn’t allowed us to consider long-term effects or overall outcomes. By creating a master plan\, we’re changing that oversight! \nOver the last six months\, a lot of work has been going on as a team made up of Vestry and other lay leaders has been taking stock of the many groups that use our space\, and identifying needs and pains associated with our growth. We’ve begun exploring what may (and may not) be possible here. \nAs we’ve done this work of reflecting and imagining\, we’ve realized how important it is to ground ourselves in our history — to recognize the gifts that are already here\, many of which have been present since the very beginning. It is astonishing to see how much members have contributed to our buildings and grounds\, dating back to work begun in 1960. Across these decades\, lay leadership has been core to this church’s existence and flourishing. These folks’ hard work has made our beautiful church home possible today\, and now it’s our turn to discern how we will help carry it forward and make it a welcoming vibrant space for those who are not yet here. \nWe hope you will join us on the 26th to learn more about this story\, add your own memories and stories to the timeline\, and help us take this next step in creating a master plan for our campus. We’ll also be reaching out soon to gather more of your wisdom and experience with our buildings and grounds\, and how we can better serve the whole community.
